Juicing! With parsnip!

I love juicing. At the moment I have been juicing on average once a day for more than a week and it is great! My motivator is having my vegan sister living next-door to me who is into that, and the desire to reduce my intake of solids. Also it feels great going to the supermarket only to get fresh produce.

I have been keeping it quite safe though, not using any tomatoes, half veg-half fruit kinda combos. Keeping it simple as well – carrot-apple(-beetroot), courgette-pear/apple, added ginger/lemon here and there, fairly simple stuff. We have been wondering regarding what more veg/fruit we can use for juicing, so we did some pure plum juice, or plum and beetroot. I was sceptical regarding plums at first, because any juice I have seen in stores is usually never fresh but from concentrate, and includes plum pulp, not exactly juice. But it juices really well! Thus plum – being currently in season as well – is included in every second juice just now.
We also juiced a little bit of some kale, but the yield was not significant really, thus it requires a lot for very little – better leave it for eating as a whole. I used up a couple of cucumbers, but as my sis is not able to digest them alongside some other foods, like peppers, we have had to find alternatives. And that is when the thought came – parsnip! We had no clue how it would juice, or what it would taste like. Yesterday morning the time had come to use them up before they go off, or roast them for alternative if it turned out awful.

We had a whole pack of parsnips, which would be around 1 kilo I imagine. We started off with apples and pears, and added the first parsnip – halfway through only to come to the realisation it might taste revolting and quickly changed the jug to a glass to separate the juice. Finished with the first one we had a try – and it was amazing! Like more amazing than carrots! It comes a little bit powdery (but that was amplified with the pears), but otherwise so smooth and sweet. In a way that it would not be a problem to have a glass of pure parsnip juice, the way you can with carrot also! But they are even sweeter than carrots. Ah, it was truly wonderful. So we continued to do the whole pack and after having given it a good stir – got a creamy ivory-coloured drink which reminded us of milkshake (and might be put to use similarly).

Here’s to another great juicing discovery!

Hello again, my dear followers,

I thought I’d share some thoughts and ‘recipes’ about a detoxing I did the past week. I had in usually two juices and one smoothie per day. The reason was for cleansing as I had quite a lot of cooked and maybe not the best health-wise food when I was travelling about in July, so I felt it was in order to return the state of my intestines to normal. On most days I didn’t have anything else to eat but the juices and a smoothie but on a couple I had a fruit or few and I also couldn’t retain myself from having some dried mulberries which I received a few days ago. Or a few fresh berries from my friends’ garden. πŸ™‚ But I tried to be mostly on the liquids. It was not difficult due to the smoothie in a day for it gave quite many calories extra and it’s basically solid food anyway (which is why I didn’t mind having some fruits in their original form).

But, here cometh the recipes.

Monday:

detox day 1

Breakfast – watermelon juice with mint (used up a whole watermelon and a bunch of mint)
Lunch –Β banana-spinach-pineapple-coriander smoothie (3 bananas, a biiiig bunch of spinach, a small bunch of coriander, 1/2 pineapple)
Dinner – carrot-orange-lime-ginger juice (500-600g carrots, 3 oranges, a nice nob of ginger, juice from one lime)

Tuesday:

detox 2

Breakfast – courgette-apple-celery-pineapple juice (2 courgettes, 2 stalks of celery, 1 apple, 1/2 pineapple, half a lemon juice and a nob of ginger)
Lunch – cucumber–spinach-apple-grape juice (1 cucumber, a big bunch of spinach (100g), 2 apples, 400g green grapes)
Dinner banana-spinach-raspberry smoothie (4 bananas, 100g spinach, 150-200g frozen raspberries)

Wednesday:

day3

Breakfast was leftover lunch from the previous day.
Lunch – carrot-celery-orange juice (750g carrots, 2 stalks of celery, 5 oranges)
Dinner – banana-peach-date smoothie (3 bananas, 400g frozen peach pieces, 200g dates)

Thursday:

detox day 4

Breakfast – cantaloupe juice (one whole cantaloupe melon)
Lunch –Β courgette-celery-apple-ginger juice (3 courgettes, 1 stalk of celery, 5 apples, a nob of ginger)
Dinner (forgot photo) – banana-spinach-coriander-berry smoothie (3 bananas, 100g spinach, a bunch of coriander, 300g frozen berry mix)

Friday:

detox day 5

Breakfast honeydew melon-pineapple juice (1 honeydew melon, 2/3 pineapple)
Lunch cucumber-coriander-apple juice with a hint of kiwi, pineapple and celery (1.5 cucumbers, a bunch of coriander, 5 apples, 4 kiwis, 1/3 pineapple, two stalks of celery)
Dinner – carrot-orange-grapefruit juice (1.5kg carrots, 2 grapefruits, 3 oranges) (REALLY like the grapefruit with carrots and oranges)

Saturday:

detox day 6

Brunch – watermelon juice (one whole watermelon)
Dinner – banana-mango smoothie (2 bananas, 2 mangoes)

Sunday:

detox day 7 001

Breakfast – banana-berry smoothie (4 bananas, 400g frozen berry mix)
Lunch – pure orange juice (6 oranges)
Dinner – pure grape juice (400g green grapes)

And that’s it! These are the juices and smoothies I made, very simple yet I’m really happy how good they all tasted πŸ™‚ I also used my juicer a lot less than during the previous juicing challenge. Citric fruits I juiced by manual citrus juicer and watery fruits (like melons, grapes, pineapple) I blended and pressed through a cotton cloth or my nut mylk bag, just because I think my juicer might waste still quite a lot of juice in the pulp. Took maybe a wee more time than would have, but I’m quite happy regardless of having done so πŸ™‚

For me, however, this was not cleansing enough. Thus I have been without any food/drink besides water since yesterday late afternoon. Details how this goes will be in my next post πŸ˜‰

Juicing day 10

And it is the end of day 10 of the juicing challenge. I have been eating quite a lot today, feeling full nearly the whole time, but did have two filling juices – in the morning and evening, using up nearly every last bit of the organic vegetables and fruits I had. Feeling indeed quite detoxified but heavy as well, being back on solid food. Definitely gonna keep up juicing at least once a day to nourish meself. Has been a wonderful experience. Maybe I’ll even sort of continue it over the Easter as I’m gonna have plenty of time, but not that good access to organic veggies and fruits…. hmm. In any event, JUICING IS AMAZING! And everyone should try it! Even if only once a day or so, it feeds you so well! And helps for getting rid of diseases/conditions that are caused by the environment/lifestyle. Just give it a try, you don’t even need much of a special equipment, I mean, I did do it by hand for two days I think, so no excuses, GET JUICING! πŸ˜€

Breakfast:

Image

4 large beetroots
2 oranges
1/2 lemon
bit of ginger

I do love beetroot but that was a bit too much, do add an extra orange if you have one spare! πŸ™‚Β

Dinner:

Image

Β

5 large apples
1/2 lemon
piece of ginger

DEEEElicious! Seriously guys πŸ˜€ Ginger just gives the extra something to juices, all the juices, apple is sweet and sour and lemon is just amazing πŸ˜€ Love apples! omnomnomnomnom. So I reckon that was a really nice juice to officially end this juicing challenge with. Also a nice addition was the chance of getting to share this with a good friend πŸ™‚Β

Cheers! *cling* πŸ˜‰

Still a bit late, but before going to sleep nevertheless! Here are my yesterday’s two recipes, two because I thought I don’t want to only juice any more and around lunchtime had some fruits and dates instead. Did not taste as good as I remembered them, but filled my stomach even in small quantities. And now I have no other vegetable left but beetroot. Hmmh….. πŸ˜›

Breakfast:

Image

8 medium-big carrots
2 oranges
1 lemon
piece of gingerΒ

Very simple yet good and nourishing. πŸ™‚

Dinner:

Image

2 handfuls of lettuce
1 cucumber
3-4 celery sticks (I used the middle part)
5 pears
1 lemon
piece of ginger

Delicious to drink up in a go! And the lovely froth on top as well :3

Good night! x

Juicing day 8

Sorry for not writing this post yesterday, it was just a looong day and I could not be bothered trying to remember what I put in the juices.

Breakfast:

Image

8 lettuce leaves (yes, I counted :D)
2 celery sticks
1/2 cucumber
1 apple
2 pears
1/2 lemon
piece of ginger

Green, foamy and delicious. A good start for a day. πŸ™‚

Lunch:

I’m afraid I forgot to take photo as I made over a litre of it and poured it to a bottle and ran off to work with it, but it looked dark purple-ish and here’s the recipe:

4 big beetroots
5 carrots
3 oranges
1 lemon
bigger piece of ginger

It tasted really nice, yes, but after having drinking it since early afternoon, I was so sick and tired with it by 6pm that I was rather starving than drinking that. So I was reallly looking forward to my dinner after work!

Dinner:

Image

2 handfuls of lettuce
1/2 cucumber
2 courgettes
1 apple
3 pears
1/2 lemon
piece of ginger

Rightfully something to look forward to! T’was great! Sufficiently enough to fill my stomach (and boy did I feel it filling up) and get me going till the morning. πŸ™‚Β

So that’s me for yesterday. Will be on time with today’s recipes!

Juicing day 7

So it is the seventh day of our juicing challenge and the reason why I’m writing this post so early is because I shan’t have a juice for dinner for it’s the Veggie Society’s social in our president’s working place, an Italian restaurant where I shall make an exception to only juicing and will have a proper raw vegan dinner instead πŸ˜› Therefore my no-eating principle will stay to five and a half days, which is quite good! I shall continue not eating after the dinner until the end of our juicing challenge, but still, one proper three course meal is definitely not juicing πŸ˜€ Anyway. Here cometh today’s recipes.

Breakfast:Β Image

Half a bunch of celery (the middle part)
Half a pineapple
3 oranges
1 lemon
big piece of ginger

Ie loads of fruits to balance the celery, haha! Came out really good though, and unlike yesterday my tongue did not get that tingling feeling due to the amount of pineapple in the juice πŸ˜› It was a morning delight indeed!

Lunch:

Image

2 large handfuls of lettuce
2 courgettes
2 long celery sticks
3 pears
1 apple
2 cm round slice of pineapple
piece of ginger

Amazing, just amazing! Will keep me going for a few hours until the dinner I’m sure! Pears are the ones that manage to get through the filter of the juicer and give quite a lot of small pieced flesh to the juice, which makes it a bit more stodgier but all’s good! Was really frothy as well again. Delicious! And I’m quite surprised at how much juice lettuce gives! The amount made nearly a litre of juice, a litre of sweet delicious nourishing juice.Β

So, there you go! Happy juicing everyone!Β

Juicing day 6

FIVE DAYS WITHOUT FOOD!!! I am actually impressed πŸ˜›

Today has been an amazing day juice-wise! Could’ve gulped down all of the juices in no time. And this evening I realised I drank reggae colours! How amazing is that! haha

Breakfast:

Image

3 beetroots
3 very little carrots
2 oranges
1 red grapefruit
1 lemon
quite a bit of ginger

This one came quite sour because of the grapefruit but ginger gave a very nice spicy kick to it – lovely!

Lunch:

Image

3 big sticks of celery
2/3 of huge pineapple (or one whole for smaller)
2 pears
nice big piece of ginger

This one was amazingly creamy and frothy, I account it for the pineapple and pear πŸ˜› It was quite a lot of juice, and filling! But I still drank it too quickly and was starving by the time I only started my shift at work. Hence I enjoyed my dinner even more once I got there!

Dinner:

Image

2 handfuls of spinach
1/3 of huge pineapple
2 oranges
ginger

That was just amazing. I cannot describe how good it was, I drank 3 glasses straight in a minute, it was THAT good! And three other people can testify as well πŸ˜€ DEEEEElicous! Pineapple is really good addition to juices, gives a lot and enhances the flavour. Yum!

And here comes an extra recipe as friends came over and juiced as well:

Image

3 apples
1 lemon
2cm ginger
5 medium-sized carrots
3 oranges

So much froth again! And creamy. And filling. Tasted really nice!

And thus fruits and vegetables from the whole range of colours were consumed today! Still feeling healthy and nourished and good! Just 4 days to go until I can give in to my craving for dates and bananas, yaaaay πŸ˜€

Good night and happy detoxifying!

Juicing day 5

It’s the evening of the fifth day of our juicing challenge and I have just finished my dinner. Feeling quite full I must admit, which is nice after quite some time since my ‘lunch’. Today started out very deliciously once again! Still surprisingly πŸ˜›Β
So that’s the fourth day now that I haven’t eaten anything solid. Feeling amazing πŸ™‚ Have to say I do feel better, more nourished, of course, and pure, clean, from the inside out. Plus, getting a bit lighter as well, amazing! πŸ˜›

Breakfast:

Image

3 courgettes
4 apples
1 pear
2.5cm ginger nob
1 lemon

That gave me quite a lot of juice that I planned to take with me to work and have there as my brunch but it came out so good I ended up drinking 3 glasses straight and sharing a bit with friends πŸ˜› So yes, a brilliant combination!Β

Lunch:
Image

As I drank all my breakfast at once, I had to make what I could at work – juiced 3 oranges by hand – cannae complain as fresh orange juice is just amazing! But it was quite a light lunch so it’s understandable how much I was waiting for my dinner haha.

Dinner:Image

6 tomatoes
2 sticks celery
1.5 bell pepper (or 1 huge one)
1 lemon
2 oranges

I have to say that my childhood disgust towards tomato juice is justified, I am really not a fan one juiced tomatoes but this turned out surprisingly good. And there was a lot of it as well, 2.5 glasses about. And I finished with it before starting writing this post so that proves something. The pepper dominates a bit with the taste and the oranges make it a bit sweeter so unless you want to drink it with pepper and salt, would be a good addition. It was fine without oranges as well but it did give a good addition nevertheless. I love the froth on top!!!

So that’s me for day 5, still enjoying this purifying ‘fast’! But mind is craving for bananas and dates so bad! A good way to improve self-discipline. And bearing in mind that I just bough medjool dates that quietly sit amongst my other nice fresh fruits for juicing to come, I dare claim I’m doing good πŸ˜›
Two more days until a solid meal though! I could of course manage longer without eating but one does not simply turn down the opportunity of having a raw vegan meal in a restaurant with lovely company!

And that’s all folks from me for today! Have a lovely beginning week! X

Juicing day 4

Another successful day nearly over! Had three delicious juices today and admittedly feeling quite full just now after my dinner. Morning started in a somewhat rush as grating and juicing by hand takes significantly longer time than with a Β juicer, thus I had to be quick to get up and get ready for the day for I went to the local TEDx conference (which was amazing, by the way haha).

Breakfast:

Image

2 beetroots
5 small carrots
2 lemons
3 oranges
bit of a ginger

It was so delicious I had to keep myself from drinking it all at once and save some for having on the go (but regardless finished with it with 30 minutes afterwards…). So a classic recipe forming here as I see πŸ˜›

Lunch:

Unfortunately I have no photo of it as I ran down to Bon Accord centre to get a juice from the Fuel juice bar there, but it was damn delicious that I drank it within two minutes or so, but can share the ingredients list with yous:

pineapple & apples juiced
strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and blackberries as well, I think – blended with the juice. I’m not sure how good a juice the berries would make so I was okay with them being blended in it, but I guess that would somewhat count as eating for it undeniably contained fibre. But it was indeed lovely to have a bit of a sweeter juice for a change! πŸ˜›

Dinner:

ImageAs you can see I shared this with my housemate πŸ˜› Because my new juicer arrived!!!!!!!!!! Happydanceeee! It’s quite big but seems like a bit longer-lasting than the previous one plus has a warranty so I should be safe, for now πŸ˜€Β

1 lemon (with peel)
tons of spinach (I used 5-6 very thickly packed handfuls)
3 sticks of celery
2 pears
2 apples
2cm nob of ginger

I have to say that this juicer does let through quite a lot of the spinach pieces unlike the previous one, but man, that was DElicious! I am feeling quite full now πŸ˜› And the lemon with peel gives it very strong flavour so that I could not detect a piece of celery in it. And the amount made tons, we both had second helpings in the glasses you see on the photo πŸ˜›

So still – no solid food as such (except the berries and whatever residue escapes the juicer’s filter), feeling great, feeling amazing, feeling aliiiiive! Yesterday night at work was a bit tiring half-way through but in the end got my energy back again so I have not noticed any downsides of this juicing fast. πŸ™‚ Life’s gooooooood! x

Β

Juicing day 3

Today has been DElicious! Once again!!! From morning till the evening! And I have not eaten! So much success in a day that I hope my work will continue in the same line πŸ˜› My mind is quite blown by the fact how great veggie juices taste. And here’s a task for me for tomorrow – to try 100% beetroot juice, just to prove that veggies taste AWESOME on their own as well πŸ˜€ I should still have enough left, I hope… Aaaanyway. I also must point out that I’ve diluted them somewhat so that when my blender does work, it would postpone the explosion bit a little further. So.

Breakfast:

Image

3 beetroots
4 medium sized carrots
2 oranges
1 plum (that my friend gave me yesterday and I managed to resist the temptation to eat beforehand! :D)
1 lemon
little nob of a ginger

I was so proud of this I had to share it with two friends I bumped into at uni, approved thrice! πŸ˜›

Lunch:

Image

4 beetroots
3 oranges
1 lemon
little piece of ginger

I LOVE BEEETROOOOOOOT!

Dinner (that I’m still drinking :D):

Image(the froth on top is the sign of a good juice! :P)

a lot of spinach! (I think I used about 6 quite large bunches)
2 apples
1 lemon
bit of ginger

Β

And thus my day has been mostly red (by the look of my hands) but a nice spinachy juice to get me going through the night. I do hope my new juicer will arrive tomorrow or I won’t be able to bring much variety to the juices as there are only so many veggies I can grate or use with the citrus juicer. Additionally, I’ve tried to drain the pulp so intensively that the seam on my nut mylk bag came loose from the bottom πŸ˜€Β destruction…..

But that’s me, folk! On a juicing fast, not eating, just drinking, feeling great, feeling energetic, feeling nourished and excluding the times when my stomach feels very talkative, even she seems quite fine πŸ˜›

Have a good evening!

Eli x
